If you already start with the mounts, you'd never experience the other half of the gameplay.Though again, this is just me. Once you get the mounts, come back for a second pass. But not to lose too much time trying to complete all the achievements/commute all the hero points. To a new player, I'd suggest to complete the story in order, playing on the map as they were meant to be played. Using your words, I liked some "agony" :) Mounts make things much easier, but also take away some fun. Even 1 week, it's not that long, if you consider that you wouldn't miss very important things (maybe you'd lose a couple of spirit shards, pff).I completed HoT before PoF came out, so maybe I'm biased, but I enjoyed the experience and trying to figure out the way to the next waypoint using the glider/tunnels/mushrooms.

Personally, I don't think that the time you need to complete the story in (any) LW or HoT is too much: a couple of days, maybe 3.
